Last week, members of the Firehouse team had the opportunity to spend an afternoon with our friends at the Dallas Independent School District for its annual Volunteers and Partners Awards Reception. It was a wonderful event as our staff interacted with volunteer organizations from across the Dallas area, all of which share a common passion for investing in local schools.
The invitation came as Firehouse was nominated by Anne Frank Elementary and selected by a panel at DISD as a finalist for the Business Partner of the Year Award.
Anne Frank Elementary is just a few miles from the Firehouse office and the relationship we have built with the students and staff is one that has been developed over the last six years. This year, our staff was given the opportunity to meet and connect with students from Ms. Zamudio’s first grade class. Each month we paid a visit to her young students and guided them through their reading assignments in the school library.
“It’s been such an ideal relationship because of the consistency and the generosity,” said Melissa Quirk, Anne Frank Elementary School Community Liaison. “The donations at Christmas, the volunteer reading and the donated school supplies. Every time we have asked for help I can’t think of a time that Firehouse has said no. The self-esteem of our first grade students has been impacted and even the reading scores on tests have seen an improvement. We’re just incredibly thankful for the commitment Firehouse has shown.”
Perhaps our favorite event comes each Christmas, as Firehouse annually adopts a handful of families from the school and makes the holiday season a reality through the donation of dozens of gifts. We collect donations from throughout the Firehouse office, shop for toys and games and several wish list items before personally delivering them to the families just days before the winter break.
“Giving back is part of the Firehouse culture,” said Doug Miller, Firehouse Partner. “The relationship we have built with Anne Frank Elementary is near and dear to all of us. Investing time with the students there brings joy to all of our staff members and we hope it has to them as well.”
The Firehouse relationship with DISD has reached beyond the classroom walls as well. In 2013, we spent a full day at both Anne Frank Elementary and JJ Rhoads Elementary completing landscape and painting projects around the two campuses as part of our annual ‘Make a Difference Day’.
The memories and relationships we have built across DISD are cherished by all of us at Firehouse. We’d like to thank the wonderful faculty members and students we’ve met throughout the last six years, and look forward to a very bright future ahead.
