Hard to believe that another Firehouse Summer Internship program has come to an end already. We were lucky to have five fantastic interns who gave us two months of hard work in addition to a couple of great ideas here and there. See what three of our interns had to say about their internship at Firehouse this summer: Jay (Creative): I was a late bloomer. No, not in that way, I mean in terms of my motor skills development. From my later single-digit years well into my tweens, the half-joking half-serious worry from my mother, coupled with her threat of finding a motor skills workshop to enroll me in will remain one of my most vivid memories of her. All because I wasn’t very good at tying my shoes or buttoning buttons! Come on, I eventually figured it out right? Anyways, flash-forward a decade later to a place called Firehouse where I find myself standing in front of a foosball table; motor skills hell. Read More

When I grow up, I want to be an Account Planner. This much I know. What I can’t remember is when I actually made the decision. It could have been a year ago, when I first analyzed MRI+ reports (and loved it, like the nerd I am), or it could have been this summer, when I helped with my first focus group. What began as an inkling grew into a conviction, and although I’m not sure how it happened, I’m glad it did. Talking to other Planners, I’ve found that many of them got into Planning like I did. We just fell into it. If I had to guess why that is, I’d have to blame the job’s complexity. It’s hard to flat-out choose a career that has so many definitions and interpretations. The UK’s Account Planning Group lists more than 14 roles an Account Planner may fill, from Data Analyst to Think Piece Polemicist (whatever that means). It’s quite Read More
This summer, Firehouse is hosting four interns in our media planning, account planning, creative and social media departments. This is a snapshot at what their experience has been like so far. Elysia Hampel- Media Planning Intern Born and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and having attended the University of Arkansas for college, I have long sought an opportunity to begin my career in this big ol’ city known as “Dallas.” Although I declared my major in advertising my sophomore year, I was never quite sure in which direction I wanted to go—Creative, Account Planning, Social Media, Media Planning… After taking the one Media Planning course offered at the UofA, I decided Media Planning was the perfect field for me. While I have my degree in-hand, I wanted to make sure that this was truly the direction in which I wanted to go before I signed a contract… and so we have it… I became an intern; but not only “an Read More
On Tuesday, June 11, Ashley, Meredith and I attended an informative and entertaining luncheon hosted by AAF-Dallas. The guest speaker was Heath Nielsen, Baylor Universities Associate Athletics Director for Communications. Heath was the brains behind the ingenious campaign that helped Robert Griffin III, also known as RG3, capture the 2011 Heisman Trophy. Heath had the entire room laughing, or in Ashley’s case cringing, when showing some of RG3’s infamous play against OU that was his “Heisman moment,” that launched the campaign’s momentum and secured RG3 the Heisman. Heath walked us through his game plan media, print, an online strategy, which included creative tweets, simple print ads and impressive online videos that captured Heisman voters and fans attention. This was the first AAF luncheon I’ve attended, and all I can say is that Heath Nielsen set the bar high. I look forward to seeing what AAF rolls out next month.

TCU Professors are famous for claiming that internships should teach you about more than just a profession. They should teach you about the real world – what to expect outside of the idealistic bubble that is college. I’ve spent more than one internship experience rolling my eyes at that contrite phrase as I re-stock the office coke machine or fetch some Twizzlers Nibs for a CEO with a craving. But from the start, Firehouse was a totally different story. During my time at Firehouse, I’ve learned priceless things about the industry and gained experience that most college students don’t see until well after graduation day. I’ve helped with the re-branding of a product and presented it to a client. I’ve written briefs that were actually used by creatives who are not imaginary. This internship was not full of projects or tests – on the contrary, it was full of true experience. The kind of experience that lights a flame of Read More
