Last week, Doug, Meredith, Chanell, Ashley and I attended the Anne Frank Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. If you’re not aware, Anne Frank Elementary is a school where Firehousers volunteer to help shape the young minds of Dallas, Texas. It’s an amazing school, and we’re lucky to get to hang out there at least once a month. Not only were we provided with an amazing (and might I say: homemade) multicultural lunch, we were also blown away by the entertainment. For starters, the pre-kindergarden choir showed us how it’s done. Not only vocally – they did not hesitate to bust out some dance skills. Yes, they performed the Electric Slide and the ABC Rock and did not miss a beat. We were impressed. The luncheon was wrapped up with a raffle drawing, where Ashley won a Disney Princess puzzle and Chanell won a Blue’s Clues book. We know what they’ll be doing this week. Last Friday, Firehouse hosted its 3rd annual April Foos Tournament benefitting Taylor’s Gift. We decided to switch things up this year and headed over to Milo Butterfingers for our two-on-two tourney. We were very excited to welcome over 20 teams and many more spectators and cheerleaders. Todd Storch, co-founder of Taylor’s Gift, kicked off our tournament. After quite a few close (and some not so close) games, we named Zack and Ryan the official winners of the tournament. Congrats to our 3 final teams from Firehouse and Specific Media! We cannot thank our guests enough for helping us support this cause that is so important to us – especially during National Donate Life Month. We were able to raise over $2,000 dollars for Taylor’s Gift to help increase organ donation registries, provide support and resources to those touched by organ donation and offer scholarships. Although we like to pull pranks on each other here at Firehouse, April 1st is not just April Fool’s Day for us here at the agency. April 1st kicks off National Donate Life Month, which is especially important to our friends at the Taylor’s Gift Foundation. National Donate Life Month encourages Americans to register as organ donors and to celebrate those who have saved lives through the gift of donation. In April, Taylor’s Gift invites you to Paint It Forward! by painting your nails Taylor Blue and sharing information about organ donation registration through social media. Here at Firehouse, we have a deep passion for making a difference. Each year we honor Make a Difference Day by getting out of the office and into the community to lend a hand. And recently, we were presented with an opportunity that was bigger than ourselves – the opportunity to be a part of a historic event and change the trajectory of an entire country. Enter, The St. Lucia Project. As a part of the international service organization Global Volunteers, The St. Lucia Project is a demonstration project currently taking place in Anse La Raye on the island of St. Lucia. The goal? To raise the IQ of the village’s children and in turn reshape the future of this developing country. To date, Firehouse has developed a logo, helped create a new website, established a social media presence and begun outreach to build awareness of the program. One of my favorite aspects about Firehouse is the agency’s commitment to making a difference – for our clients as well as the community. In addition to the work we do for our non-profit partners and our agency-wide “Make a Difference” Day, Firehouse encourages each employee to take time off to volunteer for a something they are passionate about. One of the organizations that I am passionate about is the Special Olympics. I recently wrapped up my third season as an assistant basketball coach for the Notre Dame School here in Dallas. I broke up my Make a Difference Day into a few afternoon practices to help our team, the Notre Dame Spirits, prepare for the area basketball tournament (where we placed 2nd – GO TEAM!) The Special Olympics of Texas is dedicated to providing people with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to achieve. Happy New Year from all of us here at Firehouse. 2012 was a great year for the agency and we are looking forward to a successful 2013. We wrapped up 2012 on a high note with two great events: adopting two families for Christmas and celebrating the year at our annual end-of-year meeting. This year, we were on a mission to make sure two local families in need had a very merry Christmas. We raised more than $2,000 internally for our families, and we sent a team of “elves” out to fulfill their needs and to make sure they had a fun gift or two under the tree this year. As we enter the 12th month of 2012, we are looking forward to the 12th day: 12/12/12. The number “12” is significant to us here at Firehouse, and more importantly, to our friends at the 1 Million 4 Anna Foundation. Back in 2010, Firehouse helped launch www.1millionprayers.com to gain 1 million prayers for Anna Basso, the neighbor of our president, Mark Hall, to support her during her battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma. People all over the world pledged to pray everyday at 12:12 while Anna bravely fought against this rare and aggressive form of childhood bone cancer. Why 12:12? It is a direct reference to Romans 12:12, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Also – We selected a dedicated time to show our solidarity. Last Thursday we came together as an agency to toast one and other on not only another month of great work but also a successful HouseGuests and Make a Difference Day. We all settled in to enjoy a round of toasts that celebrated accomplishments across all departments. Corks this month were handed out to Megan, for grabbing her new role by the horns and for her work on both HouseGuests and Make a Difference Day, and Evan, who’s been heading up several new Interstate Batteries initiatives. Ashley also earned a bottlecap for her blog post, 1 Billion Facebook Users Can’t Be Wrong. Stay tuned for the final Champagne Thursday of 2012. Cheers!
